Synopsis
A film produced and directed by Samuel Wickey, the Amish man upon whose life and family the script is based.
Samuel and his siblings are raised by a mother who, despite her maternal instincts, cannot embrace or praise them, and cannot ever even say the words, “I love you.” Praying for God’s healing was their only allowable form of connection.
Little was known about autism in the 1970s. Samuel’s unusual behavior was considered to be a sign of possession. When his mother witnesses Samuel’s savant-like artistic talent, she is gripped with fear. Both parents realize they must hide Samuel’s sculptures since the Amish forbid any form of creative expression.
After suffering years of indignities at the hands of the church and watching his children come home bruised simply because they are Amish, Samuel’s father makes the only choice he can: to break the chains of fear and oppression, to allow feelings of hope and the expression of love to flow in his family and to leave the Amish.
After leaving the Amish, Samuel Wickey was commissioned by an NBA team and NFL athletes, to create bronze sculptures of them in action. Some of the NBA sculptures were presented for players’ retirement ceremonies on national TV.
